John Quinn's $1 Billion Culture
The 'work from anywhere' playbook of Elon Musk's law firm
Good morning, everyone.
This week’s newsletter includes: A young lawyer who ruined the ‘Suits’ stereotype, whilst simultaneously building the most ridiculous book of clients ever.
How To Build A World Class Team
John Quinn made partner – but hated being judged on effort not success, so he quit and built a $1 Billion firm where lawyers only get paid to win…
John made Partner at a top law firm in the 1980s and was instantly successful.
But, he felt empty.
In Big Law, success was measured by the hour. John noticed that his less successful peers were being rewarded the same as he was, just because they appeared busy.
“We’re not being rewarded for winning, we’re being rewarded for staying busy!” he said.
So, John gave up everything he’d worked for and quit - with no back up plan.
But there was a problem…
Law firms that rewarded winning over effort didn’t exist.
If he moved to another practice, he would face the exact same issues again. So, John and three colleagues quit, and declared war on the status quo.
They formed Quinn Emanuel: a new type of law firm.
No dress code, no corner offices and no interest in playing by the old timer rules.
First on the agenda: scrap billable hours.
The firm only took on cases they believed they could win and paid lawyers based on outcomes. If his staff lost a case, they earned nothing.
If they won, they shared in the upside, taking a percentage of the winnings.
Second: focus exclusively on litigation.
High-stakes courtroom battles instead of corporate deals, making them the go-to firm when billions were on the line.
Lastly, John encouraged his staff to “work from anywhere”.
New graduates could work remotely from day 1, an unheard-of policy at the time, and the polar opposite approach to most elite legal firms. Within a few years, Quinn Emanuel had become the go-to legal powerhouse for high-stakes cases, boasting clients like Google and Samsung, plus celebrities like Jay-Z.
Today, the firm brings in over $1 billion a year and is one of the most profitable and feared legal firms in the world.
Reflecting on his success with innovation, John recalled:
“At the time, everybody said we were crazy - never be afraid to challenge the status quo.”
Recommendation’s
John is a legend in the legal world, and I’ve been lucky to meet him a few times. If you’re new to Quinn Emanuel, watch this 30min segment on TBPN where John outlines his career including some old anecdotes.
The most talked about lawyer (besides John...) at Quinn Emanuel is Alex Spiro - a very impressive individual, and the personal lawyer of Jay-Z. Bloomberg hosted a fantastic day in the life of Alex, definitely worth your time. Watch it here.
